Equine Studies

Equine Studies

The Associate in Applied Science in Equine Studies program helps students build the foundation needed to enter the equine industry. There are many areas of focus, including equine business, welfare, therapeutic riding, management, and riding instruction.

Over 1 million full-time employment opportunities exist within the equine industry. Our degree offers the opportunity to learn about horses and their industry and develop a career/educational path.

By enrolling online, students will gain important technology skills to give them an advantage when seeking employment or additional education in the equine industry.

Choose Where You Want to Learn

In Person and Online Students can pursue the Equine Studies program in a hybrid format at one of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ University’s regional campuses, or you can complete the degree completely online.

  • Regional Campuses

    Our regional campuses offer students the excellence of an OHIO education combined with outstanding faculty while learning occurs in their local community. The Equine Studies degree is available on all of our regional campuses:

    Chillicothe Campus 

    Eastern Campus

    Lancaster Campus

    Southern Campus

    Zanesville Campus

  • Flexible Online Format

    With asynchronous coursework and flexible advising, students can complete their degree on their own schedule. Take a full load and finish the degree in four semesters, or pace your courses to fit your life and career. This program is also available through OHIO's regional campuses.

    OHIO Online Option

Curriculum 

The Equine Studies program requires a minimum of 60 credit hours. Through core courses, students gain a solid foundation in the basics of equine studies. By choosing between the Commercial Equine Business Management or Equine Studies tracks, students may specifically tailor the program to their interests and needs.

  • The Commercial Equine Business Management track provides students with a well-rounded foundation in both equine care and business management. Courses focus on leadership, law, non-profit development, employee relationships, marketing, management, entrepreneurship, business communications, facility management, event management and business practices.
  • The Equine Studies track provides students with a strong foundation in the basics of equine studies as well as skill development in the areas of equine welfare, health and care, farm management, riding and riding instruction, equine assisted activities, and business.

The Equine Studies program is a member of: Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship, International and Certified Horsemanship Association, and International Higher Education. Learn more about the program and view course requirements and electives on the University Catalog webpage.

 

Career Opportunities

Graduates of the Equine Studies Program may pursue various positions depending on the track they choose. Possible careers include stable or farm manager, riding instructor, equine secretary or records manager, sales and marketing agent, horse trainer or assistant trainer, equine journalist, horse show or event manager, horse show judge, national breed association representative, and equine photographer or artist.
