OHIO's Museum Studies certificate enhances various degree programs by providing a foundation for students interested in careers in museums, educational centers, or similar organizations focused on public outreach and education. The program emphasizes the visitor experience throughout all aspects of museum decision-making and planning process. 

Students in the program get hands-on experience with the inner operations of nonprofit and arts and cultural heritage organizations by working directly with objects and artifacts, becoming immersed in current museum methods and cultural heritage literature, and participating in valuable networking and career-building opportunities.

Admission Requirements

Admission requires junior or senior standing, a letter of recommendation from a faculty member in the major discipline of the student, and an application essay stating how the Museum Studies Certificate program meets the academic goals of the student. The recommendation and essay should be submitted to Sandra Harris. Acceptance into the program is based on the review of these materials.

Curriculum

The Museum Studies Certificate program requires a minimum of 21 credit hours. The Museum Core courses equip you with a strong foundation in museum fundamentals and practical skills, including museum operations, collections management and exhibition planning. Taking elective courses from various disciplines, ranging from anthropology and art history to film, music and theater provides a broad interdisciplinary understanding of human cultures, art and history, enhancing your ability to engage with diverse museum collections and exhibitions from a multidisciplinary perspective.
