Annual Marine Corp Marathon Event
The 2nd Year MSAT students attend this event as part of the program requirements to engage in clinical practice in collaboration with other health care and wellness professionals. This event is held in Washington, DC and typically hosts 25,000-30,000 runners including 10k, 26.2K, 50k, Kids run and participants of varying abilities, ages, and backgrounds. Our faculty serve as clinical preceptors for our students to be able to provide hands-on patient care including first aid, exertional heat illness management, traumatic injury triage, musculoskeletal injuries and more. They learn the importance of emergency planning systems, communication and teamwork with health professionals from other states and units within the Marine Corp.
IPE Events w/ HCOM Med Students
The MSAT students and the HCOM Med students organize two IPE activities in the fall semester and one event in the spring semester. The first event is a hands-on suture lab. The MSAT students join the HCOM Sports Medicine Club students meet at one of the classrooms in the HCOM building for a two hour skills lab directed by Dr. Tim Law. He reviews basic suture techniques and we share about the roles that team physicians and ATs share as part of the sports medicine team in traditional sports settings.
The second event is when the MSAT students host the HCOM students for a hands-on skills lab at Bird Area to review emergency skills for spine boarding hockey players on the ice as part of their clinical experience with the OU Club Ice Hockey. Andi Bender (AT faculty) and Cassie Petretti (Head AT for Club Ice Hockey) facilitate the lab with players serving as simulated patients to learn how to properly remove equipment and collaborate to transfer them safely on to a spine board.
