Interprofessional Education and Collaboration

"Interprofessional Education occurs when students from two or more professions that learn about, from, and with each other to enable effective collaboration and improve health outcomes.", (World Health Organization, 2010).

The College of Health Sciences and Professions (CHSP) is committed to providing a robust interprofessional education experience by offering a Bachelor of Science in Integrated Healthcare Studies, certificates, Communities of Practice, and opportunities to participate in IPE events hosted on and off campus.

Department of Athletic Training

Athletic training is a health-care profession specializing in the clinical diagnosis, immediate management, treatment and rehabilitation of acute, chronic or congenital musculoskeletal conditions.

Grandview Yard 5K

The Athletic Training Residents participated in an exertional heat illness simulation prior to the Grandview Yard 5K sponsored by Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵHealth Sports Medicine on July 10, 2024.  The residents participated with the Columbus Division of Fire, Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵHealth Physicians, and Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵHealth Athletic Training Residents Affiliate Faculty.  We were featured on .

Annual Marine Corp Marathon Event

The 2nd Year MSAT students attend this event as part of the program requirements to engage in clinical practice in collaboration with other health care and wellness professionals. This event is held in Washington, DC and typically hosts 25,000-30,000 runners including 10k, 26.2K, 50k, Kids run and participants of varying abilities, ages, and backgrounds. Our faculty serve as clinical preceptors for our students to be able to provide hands-on patient care including first aid, exertional heat illness management, traumatic injury triage, musculoskeletal injuries and more. They learn the importance of emergency planning systems, communication and teamwork with health professionals from other states and units within the Marine Corp.

IPE Events w/ HCOM Med Students

The MSAT students and the HCOM Med students organize two IPE activities in the fall semester and one event in the spring semester. The first event is a hands-on suture lab. The MSAT students join the HCOM Sports Medicine Club students meet at one of the classrooms in the HCOM building for a two hour skills lab directed by Dr. Tim Law. He reviews basic suture techniques and we share about the roles that team physicians and ATs share as part of the sports medicine team in traditional sports settings.

The second event is when the MSAT students host the HCOM students for a hands-on skills lab at Bird Area to review emergency skills for spine boarding hockey players on the ice as part of their clinical experience with the OU Club Ice Hockey. Andi Bender (AT faculty) and Cassie Petretti (Head AT for Club Ice Hockey) facilitate the lab with players serving as simulated patients to learn how to properly remove equipment and collaborate to transfer them safely on to a spine board.

Department of Exercise Physiology

A graduate degree in Exercise Physiology opens opportunities in research, clinical exercise physiology. An undergraduate degree builds a science base for continuing on to medical schools, athletic training, physical therapy and physician assistant programs.

Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehab Annual Meeting

Each year the Exercise Physiology Department participates in the Annual Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (OACVPR) Annual Meeting. The OACVPR is dedicated to the improvement of clinical practice, the promotion of scientific inquiry and the advancement of education in the field of cardiovascular and pulmonary rehabilitation for the benefit of the public and health care professionals in the state of Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ.

Annual Midwest Chapter of American College of Sports Medicine Annual Meeting

The Exercise Physiology undergraduate and graduate students and faculty participate in the MWACSM annual meeting. Other professions that participate in this event are Food & Nutrition Sciences, Athletic Training, MD/DO, and Public Health. The MWACSM is a chapter rich in tradition with a strong student focus. Through the years it has offered its members outstanding educational programs and opportunities for networking through the regional annual meeting. The MWACSM is charge with the following objectives:

  • To promote and advance scientific knowledge and application of this knowledge dealing with the effect of sports and other physical activities on the health and wellness of human beings at various stages of life.
  • To collaborate with other organizations, educators, scientists, physicians, fitness practitioners, and students concerned with the same or related specialties.
  • To arrange for mutual meetings of educators, scientists, physicians, fitness practitioners, and students concerned with the same or related specialties.
  • To initiate, promote, and collaborate on research in these fields.
  • To disseminate information pertaining to various aspects of sports, other physical activities, and medicine.

Department of Interdisciplinary Health Studies

From a Bachelor of Science in Integrated Healthcare Studies to healthcare leadership courses and certificates, we offer health-minded students an opportunity to broaden their horizons and gain new skills.

Kidfest

Kidfest is the premier event celebrating children in Athens County, taking place every April as the capstone of activities recognizing Child Abuse Prevention Month. Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ University DPT students, IHS undergraduate students, Hocking College PTA students collaborate to offer developmental screens and a mobility course.

Mindful Movements

The Athens Community Center in collaboration with Mindful Movements. Mindful Movements are classes designed for adults navigating a health journey with a compromised immune system. These classes foster a sense of community, encouraging participants to connect with others facing similar challenges. Regardless of experience, the focus is on healing, offering participants empowerment and enjoyment in this safe space.


Instructors are retired and current faculty from CHSP; Josh Christen (Ex Phys) teaches Tai Chi, Marsha Willan (retired from OHIO PT) teaches Pilates, Sara Berens (DSPH) teaches art, Dr. Angie Hillman (Ex Phys) teaches strengthening, Ashley Pape (Hocking grad) teaches crafts, and program director Tobe Gillogly (IHS) teaches dance.  All instructors volunteer their time, and the community center donates the space so that community members can participate in these classes for free each month.

Vinton County Help Me Grow Playgroups

Vinton County Help Me Grow Playgroups- OHIO DPT students join with Help Me Grow (HMG) in Vinton County to offer playgroups for area families each month.  Playgroups provide a nutritional snack, crafts, movement/play opportunites, a time for families to connect, receive resources, and have fun.  Beginning in 2016 with the director of HMG and Tobe developing the mutually beneficial opportunity and continues on as part of PT portfolio and pediatric courses with Dr. Michele Courtney and Tobe Gillogy.

Teen Time

Community Halloween Block Party

Community Halloween Block Party-IHS 2930 Interprofessionalism in Healthcare and IHS 3934C Interprofessional Community Experience instructed by Anna Brooks and Tobe Gillogly- OHIO students from various CHSP programs have the opportunity to take these courses and collaborate with the Athens Community Center to offer games and activities during the community Halloween block party.

Department of Food and Nutrition

The College of Health Sciences and Professions' Department of Food and Nutrition at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ University offers undergraduate, graduate and research opportunities to students. Research opportunities include the use of the food science lab, sensory analysis lab, innovation lab, quantity foods lab and nutrition counseling lab.

Department of Hearing, Speech, and Language Sciences

Our faculty is dedicated to exploring the science of human speech, hearing and language as well as seeking new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat various communication disorders. The Department’s undergraduate program in hearing, speech, and language sciences is one of the largest in the United States, and its graduate programs in speech-language pathology and audiology are consistently ranked among the best in the nation.

Colloquium

The Speech Language Pathology (SLP) and Audiology (AuD) students participate in the Colloquium where they learn the basics of Cognitive Screening and its importance in the clinical practice of SLPs and AuDs.

Newborn Hearing Screenings

Audiology and SLP (observation) participate in Newborn Hearing Screenings. 

Implantable Devices

Annually, AuD students present to the SLP MA students on implantable devices.

Balance Assessment

Annually, AuD students prepare a class presentation for the Physical Therapy students on balance assessment from the audiologist's perspective.

Botswana Rehabilitation Services

Annually, students will have the opportunity to explore rehabilitation services in under-resourced areas and co-treat with physiotherapists and speech-language pathologists/audiologists at Camphill Community Trust, Princess Marina Hospital, Mariri Speech Therapists and Audiologists and Progressive Physiotherapy Clinic in Gaborone and Francistown.

As a part of their involvement, students will assist faculty in the development of a workshop on rehabilitation services for health professionals and educators in Botswana.

Course Offering

Annually, each spring, Audiology students can take a course taught by Physical Therapy and Audiology on balance assessment and Treatment from a physical therapy perspective.

School of Nursing

The School of Nursing is proud to be the home of some of the fastest growing programs in the college, including an online RN to BSN, online MSN, and online DNP degrees as well as traditional on-campus BSN programs on the Athens and regional campuses.

Identification and Management of Child Abuse and Neglect Collaboration

Collaboration with Social Work-Undergrad nursing and social work students on the Zanesville campus. The focus of the learning activity was the identification and management of child abuse and neglect. Teamwork, communication, and respect for each other.

Community Health Workers

Students participate in IPE in the Community Health Workers program along with CHSP Social Work with online classes in Ukraine and locally through Integrated Services.

IPE Collaboration Event

The nursing students and students from the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine are collaborating for an IPE event in the spring.

Department of Physical Therapy

The Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ University Physical Therapy Program takes pride in our comprehensive three-year curriculum that provides the depth and breadth of preparation for you to excel as a clinician.

We are dedicated to excellence and leadership in preparing future physical therapists with the knowledge, behavior, skills, and inter-professional experiences required to function as a movement specialist within the contemporary healthcare environment.

IPE Communication Activity

Fall -1st year PT students and 1st year HCOM students complete an IPE Communication activity. Students discuss DO and PT scope of practice and participate in 2 communication simulations related to patient care.

PT8908 Adv Balance and Vestibular Elective

Fall -3rd year PT students enrolled in PT8908 Adv Balance and Vestibular elective work with Audiology students where the PT demonstrate/teach the clinical oculomotor exam and Audiology Student perform VNG on the PT students. Each discipline teaches the other about the variations in testing.

Clinical Research Journal Club

Dr. Grooms hosts weekly clinical research journal club that includes PT, HCOM, HTC, PhD, BME and other students.

OMNI\TBS Lecture Series

OMNI\TBS has a lecture series that can include PT students\faculty other CHSP professions, HCOM, PhD, BME etc.

Clinical Education Experiences

During full-time clinical education experiences (especially in-patient experiences) – students interact with interprofessional healthcare team (usually authentic interprofessional practice (IPP) but sometimes it is more of an IPE project/activity). To reflect on their IPP/IPE - the topic of one of our virtual small group meetings is IPE/IPP in PT 8921 (P2). Each student presents an IPE experience they had during clinical describing the experience itself (team members involved, what was done/accomplished as a team, etc.) and their reflection of the activity/practice (would the outcome have been different without having a team, was a team member missing that would have made the outcome better, which team member took the lead, how did you know when to lead and when to follow, etc.).

PEP!

During PEP!, the PT students interact with undergrad ex phys students that are enrolled in the EXPH4495: Exercise Testing and Prescription for Special Populations course.

OSU Pharmacy and Dietetics IPE Event

 
Students participate in a spring event with OSU Pharmacy and Dietetics, along with the ODU PA Program. 
 

EMS Ride-a-longs

Second year PA students are assigned to EMS shifts with paramedics.  This provides them with the opportunity to experience emergency medicine and observe paramedic practice and interprofessional emergency medicine teams.

The Department of Social and Public Health is where personal passion meets public good, with programs including Child and Family Studies, Community and Public Health, Environmental Health Science, and Health Services Administration.

Bobcats for Children and Families

Students in the Human Development and Family Science program have the opportunity to participate in the Bobcats for Children and Families organization. Through this organization, students will grow as helping professionals by gaining further hands-on experience, working with children and families through volunteering, fundraising, advocating, and participating in various service projects related to this field. Members act on behalf of the needs, rights, and well being of the children in Athens County and surrounding areas.

The Social Work program at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ University offers a wide variety of degree programs, including an on-campus bachelor’s degree in social work and on-campus and 100% online versions of its Master of Social Work degree.

Neuropsychology for Behavioral Health Workers

Students participate in an interactive workshop that introduces students to key neuropsychological concepts that enhance client-centered interventions. Participants will discuss and practice skills-based somatic, experiential, and self- and co-regulation practices for personal and professional use. Participants will understand how stress and trauma impact the brain and behavior, enabling helpers to develop more effective intervention strategies.

Implementation of Evidence-Based Medications for OUD in Rural Settings

Students participate in the Implementation of Evidence-Based Medications for OUD in Rural Settings event. This presentation explores an implementation project in rural Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ to expand access to medications for opioid use disorder. 

The Roles Rural Health Care Organizations Play in their Communities

The students participate in this discussion of the services and supports health care organizations offer to rural communities, as well as some of the gaps that exist.
