UCC Academic Program Reviews of CAS Programs
The University Curriculum Council (UCC) conducts periodic program reviews as required by the Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ Department of Higher Education (ODHE) and the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). The typical time frame for such reviews is every seven years; however, COVID-19 necessitated significant changes to the 10-year schedule. Programs are therefore encouraged to check the next date of their review.

Timeline
- March prior to your review year: UCC notification and orientation session
- By April 1: contact Joni Wadley, Senior Director for Institutional Effectiveness, to coordinate data support. Please be respectful of this deadline as it helps Joni plan longer-term.
- No later than July 30: submit a list of potential external reviewers to the UCC Program Review Chair.
- Sept. 15: program self-studies are due. Submit to PRC chair and Brian McCarthy, Senior Associate Dean.
- Oct./Nov.: Site visit (external and internal reviewers meet with stakeholders)
The Self-Study
The self-study should:
- address all relevant questions posed in the ,
- provide a strong narrative and relevant data on the program’s past and current work,
- identify short and long-term goals and aspirations.
Examples of self-studies are available in the program review archive.
Preparing for the Site Visit
- Programs are responsible for organizing the site visit.
- Submit a list of at least three possible external reviewers by July 30.
- Be aware of possible conflicts of interest.
- The PRC chair will notify you of the proposed reviewers' acceptability.
- Once you have confirmed an external reviewer and chosen a date for your site visit, check with the CAS dean’s office to make sure Dean Ando is available on your date.
- Dean Ando would like to meet with the review team twice, once at the beginning and once toward the end of the site visit. He has offered to host an 8 a.m. breakfast meeting, to which the department chair/director is also invited. The wrap-up meeting should be with just the review team.
- Inform the PRC chair of your date.
- Once the date is confirmed, create the agenda for the site visit.
- Follow the Site Visit Requirements outlined in the UCC Program Review Process document.
- Internal reviewers will be chosen by the PRC chair from a pool of OHIO colleagues who underwent training for program review.
Funding
- The provost’s office provides a total of $1,000 in funding for each review.
- Programs need to cover any additional costs themselves (e.g., the external reviewer’s honorarium, their travel expenses, accommodation, meals, etc.).
- The provost’s office does not initiate the compensation process for external reviewers.
- External reviewers must be compensated through BobcatBuy.
- Contact Bose Maposa for the correct account # for the reviewer’s honorarium.
- Internal reviewers receive an honorarium from the provost’s office.
