Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ-Leipzig Double Master's Program Specific Requirements

Double Master's Program: Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Chemistry and Biotechnology (Leipzig University) and Master of Science (M.S.) in Chemistry (Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ University)

The 16 to 18 months before the defense of the masters thesis are typically organized as outlined below (see also Graduate Requirements for policies and expectations):

  • First Summer Semester (May to August): The student works on a joint research project at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ University, and enrolls for a minimum of 1 credit. The Double Masters degree candidate's thesis research project is supervised jointly by the student's research adviser at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ University, and the student's research adviser at Leipzig University.
  • Fall Semester (August to December): The student registers for three graduate classes (selected by both Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and Leipzig advisers to satisfy the M.S. and M.Sc. degree requirements), one seminar, and works on thesis research project at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ University, for a total of 18 credits.
  • March: The student works on research project at Leipzig University and may have option to attend German Language classes depending on availability.
  • April to July: The student attends classes at Leipzig University (delivered in English; classes are selected by both Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ and Leipzig advisers to satisfy the M.S. and M.Sc. degree requirements), and works on thesis research project. The combined coursework and research experience in Leipzig translates into 12 Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ University credits.
  • Second Summer Semester (August to defense): the student completes thesis research project, writes thesis, and proceeds to defense. Students must satisfy the thesis submission and defense requirements for both universities and enroll for a minimum of 1 credit in the semester in which they defend.

The student enrolled in the program must earn at least 50 percent of their credits at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ University. The administrative details of this program are as articulated in the Cooperation Agreement between Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ University and the University of Leipzig.

Sample Program of Study

Junior Year

  • Conduct undergraduate research. (recommended)

Senior Year

M.S. Graduate Studies

Summer Semester (usually at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ University, minimum 1 credit)

  • Conduct graduate research.
  • Learn some German. (Highly recommended, but not required. For more information see "Language" on Double Masters Information Page)

Fall Semester at Ä¢¹½ÊÓƵ University (minimum 18 credits)

  • Take three graduate courses.
  • Continue graduate research.
  • Take a graduate seminar.

Spring Semester at Leipzig University (March to July, transfer back a minimum of 12 credits.)

  • Continue German language learning (highly recommended).
  • Conduct graduate research.
  • Take two graduate courses (taught in English).

Second Summer Semester (minimum 1 credit)
