Stay safe online: Reporting phishing emails, Teams messages

Phishing emails are designed to trick you into sharing sensitive information by pretending to be from a legitimate source. Reporting these emails helps protect you and others from cyberattacks.   

The ĢƵ University Office of Information Security has recently updated its Knowledge Base article on to include information about how to report suspicious emails and Teams messages to Microsoft directly. Reporting phishing emails not only removes them from your inbox but also helps Microsoft improve its spam filters. This ensures that similar emails are blocked in the future, protecting you and other users. 

How to report suspicious emails and messages

Within your Outlook inbox, right-click on the email in question. Under the report section of the pop-up menu, select “Report Phish.“

If a decision is reached about the email you reported, you will receive a message from <submissions@messaging.microsoft.com> with a subject line beginning with "Results on the email you reported as Phish."

If you receive a Teams Message you suspect is a phishing attempt, you can report it directly to Microsoft. Within the Teams Application, click the three dots to the right of the message, then “Report This Message” and select “Security Risk. “
