OHIO Board of Trustees to learn more about national impact of University carbon materials research efforts, receive fundraising and engagement update

The ĢƵ University Board of Trustees will learn about the growing national impact of OHIO’s carbon materials research and leadership development; they will also receive an update regarding fundraising and alumni engagement following the University’s most recent, record-breaking Giving Day during meetings Thursday, April 17, and Friday, April 18, on the Athens campus.  

Additionally, the Board will receive an enrollment update from Vice President of Enrollment Management Candace J. Boeninger, highlighting the University’s positive student return rate from fall to spring and a brief update on the enrollment planning process. Executive Vice President and Provost Don Leo will offer a presentation on the metrics that will enable OHIO to monitor the implementation and progress of Dynamic Strategy. 

The Board will also engage with students in the Center for Law, Justice and Culture to learn about the full scope of education and experiential learning offered at the Center.

Committee meetings will begin at 11:20 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, in Walter Hall 104 and conclude around 2:30 p.m. Committee meetings will resume on Friday, April 18, starting at 9 a.m., with the main board meeting beginning at 11:40 a.m. The complete schedule and agenda for the April meetings, as well as links to livestreams for both days, is available online at ohio.edu/trustees. &Բ;

Carbon Materials Research
Academics and Student Success Committee, 1 p.m., Thursday, April 17, Walter Hall 104 

Executive Vice President and Provost Dr. Donald Leo and Jason Trembly, Russ Endowed Chair and director of the Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Environment will share with the Board an overview of carbon materials research currently happening at OHIO and how the University continues to play a growing role nationally in this important research space.

The presentation will outline the “built environment,” highlighting the associated challenges and emphasizing the unique opportunities available to Appalachia. Trembly will also introduce the carbon materials research team, showcasing their achievements to date and discussing their future goals and ambitions. He will demonstrate the importance of carbon materials and OHIO’s research and development leadership in this area.

The Board will also hear about the critical need for carbon materials, including Appalachia’s role in addressing “built environment” demands and OHIO’s plans to further enhance our prominence in this field.

Center for Law, Justice and Culture presentation
Academics and Student Success Committee, 1 p.m., Thursday, April 17, Walter Hall 104 

The Board will engage with students from OHIO’s Center for Law, Justice and Culture (CLJC), learning from them about the numerous curricular and extracurricular programs related to the study of law and society.

During their presentation, the students, as well as Kevin Uhalde, director of the Center for Law, Justice and Culture and associate professor of History, and Larry Hayman, director of Legal Engagement and the Pre-Law Program in the Center for Law, Justice, and Culture, will highlight the multiple ways the CLJC offers student experiential learning opportunities and prepares them for careers in related fields. 

University Advancement: Fundraising and Engagement Report
Resources, Facilities, and Affordability Committee, 9 a.m., Friday, April 18, Walter Hall 104 

Vice President of University Advancement and President & CEO of The ĢƵ University Foundation Greg Simmons will provide the board with a fundraising and engagement report that will give insight into strategic Advancement priorities and report on key fundraising and engagement activity in support of OHIO.

He will highlight University Advancement’s strategic priorities, as well as provide a summary of commitment dollars, cash donors and alumni donors, and cash dollars into The ĢƵ University Foundation. Simmons will also share endowment updates and reporting on fiscal year 2024 CASE Engagement metrics and alumni giving to OHIO. During the presentation, he will also highlight OHIO’s successful Giving Day earlier this month.

FY25 Financial Forecast
Resources, Facilities, and Affordability Committee, 9 a.m., Friday, April 18, Walter Hall 104 

Vice President for Finance & Administration, CFO and Treasurer David B. Moore will provide the Board with a brief update on the FY25 financial forecast. 

Capital Projects
Resources, Facilities, and Affordability Committee, 9 a.m., Friday, April 18, Walter Hall 104 

The Board will consider several new capital projects, including: 

  • ĢƵ University Zanesville HVAC and Energy Efficiency Improvements Phase II - The Board will consider a resolution for the continuation of the work started in Phase I by replacing outdated HVAC and electrical components to address deferred maintenance need in Elson Hall and Herrold Hall. This upgrade will ensure system reliability, reduce operating costs and improve occupant comfort. This $2.8 million project will be funded with State Capital Appropriations.
  • ĢƵ University Lancaster Brasee Hall Nursing Renovations Phase III – The Board will consider a resolution to approve converting rooms 401, 402, 408, 409 and 410 in Brasee Hall into a Nursing instructional lab, simulation lab and classroom space. The enhanced campus facilities resulting from this project will support continued growth in the Nursing program to meet regional health care needs. This $996,450 project will be funded with Regional Higher Education Departmental Reserves.
